Caption: "Old Cathedral, St. Augustine." View of the tower, columned entryway, and bells of Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. The oldest church in Florida, the first building on the site was established in 1565. The cathedral seen in this photograph (which exists today) was constructed between 1793 and 1797. The cathedral was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

Caption: "Fort Canby Lighthouse, Wash.," c. 1910. View of the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse on a rocky point overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River. Cannons and cannon balls are stored on the lighthouse property. Built in the 1850s, the lighthouse was electrified in 1934 and automated in 1973. The lighthouse is now part of the Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby State Park).

Caption: "Olvera St. Mexican Market Place, Los Angeles, May 18, 1934." View of the Olvera Street Market in Los Angeles. In 1926, Christine Sterling began efforts to preserve the buildings on and around Olvera Street (one of the oldest parts of Los Angeles). After several years of struggle and fundraising, Olvera Street was closed to automobile traffic in 1929, and opened as the Paseo de Los Angeles in 1930. The street and its market quickly became popular tourist sites, promoters touting the area as "A Mexican Street of Yesterday in a City of Today."

View of building with gabled roof and sides sheathed in wood planks, with a small shed to the left and another small building to the right. Fort Casey was part of the "triangle of fire," three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. Construction began on the fort in 1897, and the U.S. Army used the facility until the 1950s, when the fort was decommissioned. The area is now a state park.
