Caption: "Silver Springs -- Florida, June 24, 1934." Grace McCarthy seated in a gazebo with a conical roof sheathed in grass or brush. Silver Springs, a series of artesian springs in Marion County, was Florida's first tourist attraction. The area began to attract visitors after the Civil War, in the late 1860s. In the late 1870s, entrepreneurs started offering glass-bottom boat tours of the springs. The locale became popular in the 1930s with film producers: several of the original Tarzan movies were filmed here, as was the Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954).

Caption: "Cliff House #2." View of the third Cliff House, of Victorian-style architecture, that was built on that site in San Francisco, c. 1906. The original Cliff House was built in 1858. The second was built in 1863 and was destroyed by fire on Christmas day in 1894. The third Victorian- style Cliff House (pictured) was completed in 1896, and although it survived the 1906 earthquake and fires, it burned to the ground in 1907. A fourth Cliff House was then built with steel-reinforced concrete and opened in 1909.

Caption: "Golden Gate Bridge Construction, July 1, 1936." View of the Golden Gate Bridge while under construction. The towers and suspension cables have been built, but the work on the bridge deck has not started. Completed in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge spans the mouth of San Francisco Bay (called the Golden Gate), connecting San Francisco with Marin County to the north. It is one of the most recognizable bridges in the world, and was named in 1994 as one of the Modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Caption: "Green Hotel Pasadena," c. 1915, shows Grace McCarthy standing before the Hotel Green in Pasadena, built by George Gill Green in 1893, and expanded by him in 1898 and 1903 with two additional structures. The hotel complex was sold to private investors and by 1924, the 1898 Central Annex structure (Frederick L. Roehrig, architect) was turned into apartments and renamed the Castle Green. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the California Register of Historic Places, and the City of Pasadena's list of historic places. See also 96-07-08-alb07-212.

Caption: "Modern Locomotive. Chicago & North Western R.R. Chicago Fair, Sept. 21, 1934." Grace McCarthy is seated next to a large locomotive of the Chicago and North Western Railroad while visiting the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. The locomotive was one of the new Class H 4-8-4 engines, capable of pulling either freight or passenger trains. These locomotives were among the heaviest of their class produced in America, and were dubbed the "Zeppelins of the Rails." This photograph was loose in the box with Album 11.

Caption: "San Francisco Fire April 8 [sic], 1906." Photograph of a page from the Seattle Daily Times. The headline reads "Photographic Glimpses of the Once Proud City." Several photographs of significant buildings in San Francisco are shown (such as the City Hall), all of which are listed as having been destroyed by the earthquake and fire of April 6th.
