Caption: "Court House, Port Townsend, Wash.," c. 1908-1912. View of the Jefferson County Courthouse in Port Townsend, Washington. Built the early 1890s and designed by W. A. Ritchie, the Romanesque-style building features a 124-foot clock tower, red bricks from St. Louis, and sandstone from Alaska.

Caption: "Conservatory -- Botanical Gardens -- St. Lewis," c. 1923. Shows the Palm House, built in 1915 to house tropical plants in the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis. It was torn down in 1959 to make room for the domed geodesic Climatron building which still stands at the site. See also 96-07-08-alb09- 086.

Caption, c. 1905. Sixteen camels pull the Ringling Brothers Egyptian Circus Wagon down a street in Santa Rosa in this photograph. The Ringling Brothers Circus first came to Santa Rosa in 1903. The traveling circus became an annual event in the town for the next two decades.

Caption: "Buriel [sic] of the U.S.S. Bennington Victims. -- Fort Rosecrans." Shows a grave site with dozens of caskets ready for burial. A priest and two altar boys stand at one side of the caskets, while a large group of U.S. Navy sailors looks on from the other side. While sailing from port in San Diego on the morning of July 21, 1905, the boiler of the USS Bennington exploded, killing sixty-six of her crew. The victims were laid to rest in the cemetery at Fort Rosecrans. See also 96-07-08-alb08-217.

Caption: "State Capitol, Richmond, Virginia. July 21, 1934." Virginia's State Capitol is visible in the left side of this photograph, while the Virginia Washington Monument can be seen at the right. The Capitol, designed largely by Thomas Jefferson and French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, was sufficiently complete by October 1792 for the Virginia General Assembly to meet within its walls. The building served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Virginia Washington Monument, completed in 1869, features a 21-foot-tall statue of George Washington, mounted on a horse.

Caption: "Statue of Liberty, New York. Aug 2, 1934." View of the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe Island (now called Liberty Island). Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the now-iconic statue was a gift from the people of France to the U.S. Built in segments in France by Gustave Eiffel (also famous for building the Eiffel Tower in Paris), the pieces were shipped from Paris to New York in 1885 and assembled. The Statue of Liberty was subsequently dedicated on October 28, 1886.
