Caption: "Central Park. View from Radio City Blg. New York. Aug. 14, 1934." Bird's eye view of New York City's 843-acre Central Park. Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead and architect Calvert Vaux designed the park, the first portion of which opened to the public in 1858. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962.

Caption: "Grant Hotel -- San Diego," c. 1910. View of the U.S. Grant Hotel, built by the son of Ulysses S. Grant (Union General and 18th President of the U.S.), who named the hotel for his father. The building, designed by Harrison Albright, opened for business in October 1910.

This photograph shows two steam locomotives from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, on display at the 1934 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago, celebrating that city's one-hundred year anniversary of incorporation. This photograph was loose in the box with Album 11.

Caption: "City Hall - Detroit," c. 1925. Grace McCarthy poses in front of Detroit's City Hall. The Italian Renaissance Revival-style building, designed by architect James Anderson, was constructed between 1867 and 1871. It housed Detroit's city government until 1955, when a new facility was ready for occupation. This building was subsequently demolished in 1961.

Caption: "Mormon Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake City population 145, 500," c. 1935. The Salt Lake City Mormon Temple was opened in 1893 and is the largest temple (253,015 square feet) built by the Church of the Latter-day Saints.

No caption, c. 1917. William McCarthy standing next to a 6" Howitzer at Camp Kearney. Camp Kearney was established by the U.S. Army in 1917 just north of San Diego. The post was largely abandoned by the government in 1920, used as a military and civilian airfield. It did not see increased military service again until the 1930s.

No caption, c. 1909-1915. Group of unidentified men gathered around a part of what appears to be a 12-inch mortar at Fort Ruger, Hawaii. Fort Ruger was established on the Island of O'ahu by the U.S. in 1906 as the Diamond Head Reservation. Its name was changed to Fort Ruger in 1909. See also 96-07-08-alb05-098 and 100.
