Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead and architect Calvert Vaux designed the park, the first portion of which opened to the public in 1858. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962.

The pool, sometimes called Emerald Spring, is located in the park's Black Sand Basin. Yellow sulphur deposits, combined with the blue of the water, give the pool a vivid green color.
