No caption. William McCarthy stands in front of the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, c. 1935. Opened in 1927 and designed by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, the Ahwahnee Hotel is located on the floor of Yosemite Valley. It was built as a resort hotel by the Yosemite Park and Curry Company. Modernized over the years, its name was changed to the Majestic Yosemite Hotel in 2016, as a result of legal dispute over trademarked names in the park.

Shasta Springs, just north of Dunsmuir, California, in the Trinity Mountains, was a resort area in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It centered around natural springs, which became a featured stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad's Shasta Route. The resort operated until the 1950s, when it was purchased by private interests.

Wealthy businessman Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, Sr. had the Vanderbilt Hotel constructed on the site of a former Vanderbilt residence in New York City, just six blocks from the new Grand Central Terminal. Designed by architects Warren & Wetmore, the hotel opened in 1912. The top two stories were constructed as a private residence for Vanderbilt's family. The hotel still stands today, although it has undergone some renovations.
