Potter, the hotel sold in 1919 to the Santa Barbara Hotel Company, controlled by D.M. Linnard. The famous luxury resort burned down in 1921. See also 96-07-08-alb05-070, and 96-07-08-alb04-097.

Caption: "Canby Lighthouse.," c. 1905-1909. The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse sits on a rocky point overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River. Built in the 1850s, the lighthouse was electrified in 1934 and automated in 1973. The lighthouse is now part of the Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby State Park).

Caption: "Old Hermitage, Savannah, Georgia, July 15, 1934." The remains of the Hermitage Plantation mansion, built in 1830, can be seen through trees draped with Spanish moss. Hermitage was a 400-acre plantation on the Savannah River, owned by Henry McAlpin. McAlpin not only conducted farming operations at the planation, but also manufactured bricks, barrels, cast iron products, and lumber.

Caption: "Tenaya Lake Resort." Small cabins in front of rocky mountainside. Named after Chief Tenaya of Yosemite Valley's Ahwahnechee People, Tenaya Lake is located between Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows within Yosemite National Park. The surface elevation of the alpine lake is 8,150 feet.

Caption: "Morro Castle -- Havana -- Cuba. July 4, 1934." Morro Castle, also called Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro, has guarded the entrance to Havana's harbor since 1589. Various additions have been built over the years, including the Faro Castillo del Morro Lighthouse, added in 1846. Morro Castle currently houses the offices of the Havana Harbormaster, and operates as a museum.

Caption: "Martinez Court House," c. 1905-1906. View of the Martinez Courthouse, built in 1901 and designed by William H. Toepke. In 1933, Martinez built a new Hall of Records, into which the courts subsequently moved. The 1901 courthouse became the Finance Building in 1966.

The Gatling gun was an early rapid-fire, crank-turned weapon first used during combat in the Civil War. Developed in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the weapon was commonly used during the late nineteenth century before being superseded by newer, more modern guns.

Caption: "Washington Monument - Fairmount Park - Philadelphia," c. 1925. Philadelphia's Washington Monument Fountain (Rudolf Siemering, sculptor) features a bronze and granite statute of George Washington on horseback. Dedicated at Fairmount Park in 1897, it was moved to Philadelphia's Eakins Oval in 1928.
