    Caption: "Point Loma.," c. 1905. View of Point Loma and the so-called "New Point Loma Lighthouse" in the center. The lighthouse, first lit in 1891, replaced the "Old Point Loma Lighthouse" that had been constructed in 1855. The old lighthouse was often obscured by fog, so a new lighthouse was built at a much lower elevation much closer to sea level. The light was automated in 1973.

    Caption: " Cliff House #3." View of people on Ocean Beach and walking up the road to the (fourth) Cliff House in the distance, San Francisco, c. 1910. The original Cliff House was built in 1858. The second was built in 1863 and was destroyed by fire on Christmas day in 1894. The third Victorian- style Cliff House was completed in 1896, and although it survived the 1906 earthquake and fires, it burned to the ground in 1907. A fourth Cliff House (pictured) was then built with steel-reinforced concrete and opened in 1909.

Shasta Springs, just north of Dunsmuir, California, in the Trinity Mountains, was a resort area in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It centered around natural springs, which became a featured stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad's Shasta Route. The resort operated until the 1950s, when it was purchased by private interests.

    Caption: "Old Geary Street Line -- Last Days Work of our Old Faithful Friend." Photograph of a horse-drawn cable car, on the last day of operation of the Geary Street, Park and Ocean Railway. One of the first railways established in San Francisco, the line operated from 1880 until May 1912 when it was taken over by the city and converted to an electric streetcar line.

    Caption: "Court House -- San Diego," c. 1910. View of the second courthouse built by San Diego County, completed in 1889. Designed by architectural firm Cornstock & Trotsche of San Francisco, this elaborate building featured a bell and clock tower, statues of four presidents, and 42 stained-glass windows honoring each state in the Union at the time of installation. The tower was removed in 1939. Twenty years later, the entire building was demolished in favor of a newer facility.
