The building, known as Casa de Estudillo, was built in 1827 by José María Estudillo.

Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead and architect Calvert Vaux designed the park, the first portion of which opened to the public in 1858. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962.

California State Archives staff were not able to confirm that this house was one of the New Orleans-area residences owned by the couple.
