The photograph is centered around what appears to be a resort hotel situated a short distance from the Eisenbeis Castle.

Caption: "Rose Carnival -- Portland." Features a parade float shaped as a swan, with roses, an American flag, and a sign reading "peace." The Portland Rose Festival began in 1907 as the Rose Carnival. It is now an annual festival featuring three parades, including the Grand Floral Parade, the second-largest all-floral parade in the nation (the largest being the Tournament of Roses held each New Year in Pasadena, California).

Caption: "Cliff House, San Francisco," c. 1920. The building shown here is the fourth iteration of the Cliff House, a neo-classical design built after a fire destroyed the Victorian structure previously at the site in 1907. Reconstruction of the iconic restaurant began in 1908, and a new Cliff House opened in 1909 (the building in this photograph). The building was extensively remodeled in the 1930s.

Caption: "Midway Point.," c. 1920. Now-iconic image of a rocky outcropping near Pebble Beach, extending into the Pacific Ocean, with a single cypress tree near the top. This tree, sometimes referred to as the "Lone Cypress," has been photographed extensively over the past century. This tree and outcropping can still be seen as part of the 17-Mile Drive, a scenic road tour of the Pebble Beach Resort area in Monterey County.

Caption: "Seminole Indian Women Washing Clothes -- Everglades -- Fla. June 30, 1934." Two unidentified women and a small child washing clothing. Several articles of clothing are spread out to dry on a canoe lifted off the ground by sawhorses made of logs. They are likely Seminoles, a Native American tribe in Florida, although most of the tribe had been forcibly relocated from Florida to Oklahoma by 1842. Fewer than 200 remained in Florida after the Third Seminole War ended in 1858, but a resurgence of the tribe occurred in the early to mid twentieth century. The Florida Seminole tribe received federal recognition in 1957.

Caption: "Parkway and Dome of Ford Building. Chicago Fair. Sept. 17, 34." Several pedestrians wander along a parkway with a small lagoon and fountains, flanked by benches and manicured hedges. The Ford Building rises in the distance. The Exposition, a world fair attended by thirty-nine million people, celebrated Chicago's one-hundred year anniversary of incorporation. Originally planned to only run from May to November in 1933, it was such a success that its organizers decided to keep it running for a second season from May through October the following year. The central theme of the Exposition was technological innovation, with a motto of "Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Conforms." None of the buildings constructed for the fair are still extant today, having been built as temporary facilities.
