Caption: "Mirror Lake," c. 1917. Mirror Lake in Yosemite National Park, on Tenaya Creek, is the remains of a glacial lake that used to fill most of the valley. Its calm waters provide near-perfect reflections of the surrounding natural splendor.

Caption: "Mission Dolores. The old landmark stood," 1906. Mission Delores, the oldest intact building still standing in San Francisco today, suffered little damage from the 1906 earthquake. The parish church next to it was greatly damaged and rebuilt as the Mission Dolores Basilica, opened in 1918.

Caption: "Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch - Prospect Park - Brooklyn," c. 1925. (John H. Duncan, architect) The Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch was built between 1889 and 1892, and dedicated on October 21st, 1892 to honor the "Defenders of the Union, 1861-1865."

Design and drawing of California State Building for Nevada Highways Exposition in Reno, Nevada, by Alfred Eichler, c. 1926; from packet of designs and plans by Eichler for the Transcontinental Highways Exposition of 1927. Built. Initial appropriation of $100,000 was reduced to $50,000, so only one half of the plan was built. The tower was eliminated.

Caption: "Cabrilla [sic] Bridge. P.C. Exp. San Diego. July 18, 1915," Built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, the Cabrillo Bridge continues to provide access between Balboa Park and the uptown area of San Diego. See also 96-07-08-alb01-161.

Caption: "Nudist Colony - San Diego Expo.," c. 1935. The Zoro Garden Nudist Colony, named for the Persian mystic, Zoroaster, was an unusual and controversial attraction that featured partially nude men and women performing as nudists. Exposition visitors were charged twenty-five cents to watch the "nudists" perform ceremonies and other activities. Today, the sunken Zoro Garden in Balboa Park is a butterfly garden.

No Caption: Canadian one-cent postage stamp commemorating the three-hundred year anniversary of the founding of Quebec in 1608. This stamp features portraits of Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain, early explorers of Canada. Cartier was the first to claim Canada for the French crown in 1534, while Champlain founded New Canada and Quebec City in 1608.

Caption: "Fort Worden. Mid Winter." Construction of Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Washington, on Admiralty Inlet of Puget Sound began in 1898, and by 1902 it was serving as an active U.S. Army base. Fort Worden was part of the "triangle of fire", three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. The U.S. sold the property to the state of Washington in 1957. In 1973, the fort and surrounding area opened as Fort Worden State Park.

Caption: "Santa Clara Mission," c. 1910. Founded in 1777, Mission Santa Clara featured several different churches over the years. This photograph shows the mission church as it appeared from roughly 1861 to 1926. In the 1860s, Santa Clara College President Burchard Villager decided to rebuild many of the buildings on the campus. In the process, the mission church was renovated in the Italianate style, with a second bell tower. This Italianate-style church burned in 1926. The church was then rebuilt as a modern reconstruction of the fifth church on the site, the original of which was destroyed by fire in 1825.
