Caption: "Indian Wigwam," c. 1917. Grace McCarthy poses at the entrance to what William McCarthy labeled a "wigwam," a dwelling of the Ahwahnechee people. The Ahwahnechee (a Native American tribe who traditionally occupied the Yosemite Valley) called the dwellings o-chum. Pine branches were arranged in a tee-pee-like shape and then covered with layered slabs of cedar bark.

Caption: "Main Entrance, Stockton Insane Asylum," c. 1906. The Stockton Insane Asylum was established in 1851, completed in 1853, and was the first public mental health hospital in California. It remained a functioning state hospital until 1995.

The Portola Festival was a grand celebration devised to commemorate the discovery of San Francisco Bay by Gaspar De Portola, and for the public to celebrate the future of the rebuilt city after the 1906 earthquake and fires.
