    Caption: "Padre Junipero Sierra [sic] Monument. Monterey," c. 1915, shows a monument commemorating the Spanish Franciscan priest, Father Junipero Serra, who led the founding and construction of the Spanish Mission system in Alta California during the Spanish era. The monument was commissioned and erected in 1891 by Jane Stanford of Stanford University and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

    Caption: "Vanderbilt Hotel N.Y," c. 1925. Wealthy businessman Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, Sr. had the Vanderbilt Hotel constructed on the site of a former Vanderbilt residence in New York City, just six blocks from the new Grand Central Terminal. Designed by architects Warren & Wetmore, the hotel opened in 1912. The top two stories were constructed as a private residence for Vanderbilt's family. The hotel still stands today, although it has undergone some renovations.

    Caption: "Sea Beach Hotel," c. 1910. The Sea Beach Hotel, located on Beach Hill in Santa Cruz, was built in the 1870s by S.A. Hall. Originally called the Ocean View House, it was sold in the 1880s. Its new owner dubbed the building the Sea Beach Hotel. The resort hotel operated until burning down in 1912, never to be reconstructed.

The second of three hotels built on the site, near Monterey, California, the building in this photograph was destroyed by fire in 1924. The property surrounding the hotel became known as Pebble Beach, now a world-renowned resort and golf course.

Erroneously labeled, this photograph shows Grace McCarthy standing at the Powell Memorial on Powell Point, rather than Maricopa Point. The granite Powell Memorial commemorates John Wesley Powell, who explored the Colorado River in 1869 and 1872. The 1869 expedition included the first known descent of a person of European ancestry into the Grand Canyon.
