    Caption: "A 3 inch Field Gun Ready for Action," c. 1915. Shows a crew of men operating a 3" field gun, a heavy artillery gun set onto a carriage for mobile use. The U.S. military used these guns between 1905 and 1919, gradually phasing them out of use during the 1920s in favor of more modern weapons.

    Caption: "Brigham Youngs [sic] Bee Hive House. Brigham Young had 19 Wives and 52 Children. Oct. 3, 1934." Street scene in Salt Lake City, Utah. Brigham Young, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints built the so-called "Beehive House" in 1854 to house himself and several of his wives (Young practiced polygamy). The Beehive House is visible in the photograph at the far right, with a widow's walk featured on its roofline. Designed by Salt Lake Temple architect Truman O. Angell, the Beehive House has since been used as a residence for several dignitaries of the Mormon Church, as well as a boarding home for young Mormon women. The house was restored in the late 1950s and is now a museum. See also 96-07-08-alb11-301.

Virginia's State Capitol is visible in the left side of this photograph, while the Virginia Washington Monument can be seen at the right. The Capitol, designed largely by Thomas Jefferson and French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, was sufficiently complete by October 1792 for the Virginia General Assembly to meet within its walls. The building served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Virginia Washington Monument, completed in 1869, features a 21-foot-tall statue of George Washington, mounted on a horse.
