The Tabernacle housed meetings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints until new facilities were constructed in 2000. The Tabernacle is home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and is considered to be one of the most acoustically perfect buildings in the world due to its unique dome-shaped roof.

After the earthquake and fire that destroyed much of San Francisco in April 1906, hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless. Many of these people established temporary refugee camps, using debris from the destruction to cobble together shelters.
