This was likely part of the Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway, established in 1896 as a scenic tourist railway between Mill Valley and the east peak of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County. Eliza Smart (standing, on the left), two unidentified women, and nine children posing on the porch of a house with wood siding. This is one of the few photographs in which the McCarthys identified some of the people who they met along their travels.
