Caption: "John D. Rockefeller Mansion, Ormond [sic], Florida. July 10, 1934." A large mansion can be glimpsed through surrounding trees and other vegetation in this photograph. The mansion is known as the Casements, for the numerous casement windows incorporated into its structure. Built in 1914 in Ormond Beach, John D. Rockefeller purchased the home in 1918 for use as a winter residence. After Rockefeller died in 1937, the property was sold several times, until the City of Ormond Beach bought it in 1973. The city renovated it for use as a cultural and community center, a purpose which it still serves.

Caption: "Coney Island, Sunday Crowd. New York. Aug. 19, 1934." Very crowded beach scene on New York's Coney Island. The construction of several resort hotels on the island in the 1870s and 1880s encouraged construction of amusement parks to provide tourist destinations. Coney Island has hosted several large amusement parks over the years, including one of the world's first roller coasters (built in 1884). Numerous smaller attractions were available as well. The island's popularity peaked in the World War II era, but despite some decline is still a world-renowned recreation area.

Caption: "Golden Gate Bridge Opening Day. U.S. Fleet Passing Under the Golden Gate Bridge. U.S. Flag Ship Pennsylvania [sic]. May 28, 1937." View of the super-dreadnaught battleship USS Pennsylvania as she passed under the Golden Gate Bridge as part of the celebrations surrounding the bridge's opening day. The third U.S. Navy ship named for the state of Pennsylvania, she was launched in 1915. The Pennsylvania served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets, and was damaged while in dry-dock during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. After being repaired, she spend the remainder of World War II in the Pacific Theater. Hit by a torpedo in August 1945, the severely damaged Pennsylvania was repaired well enough to serve as a target ship during Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests off Bikini Atoll in July 1946. She was decommissioned that year, and after undergoing radiation testing, was scuttled by the U.S. Navy in February 1948.

Caption: "St. Louis Cathedral Built in 1794 by Don Andreas Almonastry Roxas - Jacksen[sic] Park - New Orleans." St. Louis Cathedral anchors one end of Jackson Square in New Orleans' French Quarter. The structure of the cathedral largely dates to the 1850 restoration and expansion of an older cathedral built on the site in 1793. Very little of the older church survived, although the central bell tower (added on to the older church in 1819) was reused in the new structure and is still extant today. A statue of Andrew Jackson mounted on a rearing horse (Clark Mills, sculptor) stands in the square in front of the cathedral. The sculpture was erected in 1856. See also 96-07-08-alb11-052.

Caption: "Government Building & Bridge of Nations, Portland Fair." Shows the Government Building, Guild's Lake, and the Bridge of Nations, a long pedestrian bridge over the lake. Some of the more than 100,000 light bulbs used to outline the exposition's buildings can be seen along the arches and decorative molding of the bridge. The Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition was held in Portland, Oregon from June 1st to October 15th, 1905. It celebrated the one-hundred year anniversary of the exploratory expedition of the Louisiana Purchase and what became the northwestern part of the United States, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Some 1.6 million people visited the fair, viewing exhibits from twenty-one countries. See also 96-07-08-alb05-206.
