Caption: "Sutro Baths S.F.," c. 1910. Interior shot of the Sutro Baths, north of the Cliff House. Designed by Adolph Sutro in 1894, the bathhouses at one time covered three oceanfront acres just north of Ocean Beach and the Cliff House. Eventually, the Sutro Baths fell into disrepair and what was left of them burned down in 1966. Since 1973, the concrete ruins have been part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Caption: "Benicia Arsenal Gate," c. 1905, Benicia, California. William McCarthy began his career as an inspector of armaments for the U.S. War Department at the Benicia Arsenal in 1903. The arsenal was established in 1851 as the first Ordnance Supply Depot in the West, from which it supplied and supported U.S. troops, from the Civil War through WWII and the Korean War. It was deactivated in 1963.

Caption: "Mirror Lane - Camp Curry," c. 1917. William and Grace McCarthy pose in front of their tent at what was then called Camp Curry. Yosemite's Half Dome Village, established by David and Jennie Curry in 1899, was originally called Camp Curry, and then later Curry Village. It was designed to provide cheaper accommodations for Yosemite tourists than the resort hotels. The couple rented out furnished tents and provided amenities such as a dining tent. As time progressed, the amenities increased, and some hard-sided cabins created.

Project for Department of Mental Hygiene - Hospitals. The hospital was initially named Pacific Colony (1927-1953), followed by Pacific State Hospital (1953-1979); Frank D. Lanterman State Hospital and Developmental Center; and finally Lanterman Developmental Center, which closed in 2015.

Caption: "Government Building. Portland Exposition." Shows the Government Building, Guild's Lake, and the Bridge of Nations, a long pedestrian bridge over the lake. Some of the more than 100,000 light bulbs used to outline the exposition's buildings can be seen along the arches and decorative molding of the bridge. The Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition was held in Portland, Oregon from June 1st to October 15th, 1905. It celebrated the one-hundred year anniversary of the exploratory expedition of the Louisiana Purchase and what became the northwestern part of the United States, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Some 1.6 million people visited the fair, viewing exhibits from twenty-one countries. See also 96-07-08-alb08-158.

Caption: "Mammoth Hot Springs Resort," c. 1923. Grace McCarthy poses in front of Mammoth Hot Springs Resort. Originally called the National Hotel, the building opened for business in 1883. It underwent significant alterations and renovations between 1911 and 1913, by which time the resort was known as the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. The hotel was torn down in 1936 in favor of a more modern facility.
