Caption: "Statue of Liberty, New York. Aug 2, 1934." View of the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe Island (now called Liberty Island). Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the now-iconic statue was a gift from the people of France to the U.S. Built in segments in France by Gustave Eiffel (also famous for building the Eiffel Tower in Paris), the pieces were shipped from Paris to New York in 1885 and assembled. The Statue of Liberty was subsequently dedicated on October 28, 1886.

Caption: "A.Y.P.E. Seattle." Cascading fountains at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was held in Seattle, Washington in 1909 to celebrate the development of the Pacific Northwest. The fair attracted 3.7 million visitors over the course of its run from June to October 1909. Although most of the fair's buildings have since been destroyed, several of them now serve as part of the University of Washington campus.

The Village is home to such amenities as a Post Office, store, medical clinic, fire station, and restaurants. Development began at the site in 1865, but most of the buildings were constructed after 1918.

Caption: "San Francisco Bay Bridge Cable Anchorage. Nov. 1, 1935." View of a cable anchorage at one terminus of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The Bay Bridge's design combined three different types of bridge-building technology over the five miles it covers between San Francisco and Oakland: a suspension span, a cantilevered span, and a tunnel. At the time of its completion in 1936 the bridge was the longest steel structure on the globe. It also featured the deepest bridge pier ever built, and the world's largest bore tunnel.

Caption: "The Bennington (after the Boiler Explosion)." View of the USS Bennington, a U.S. Navy gunboat, Yorktown class, launched in 1890. She had tours of duty in South America, the Mediterranean, North and Central America, Hawaii, and the Philippines. On July 21, 1905, while in San Diego Harbor, the Bennington's boiler exploded, killing sixty-six men and injuring many more. Taken after the explosion, in this photograph the Bennington sits low in the water.
