Caption: "6 inch Howitzers -- Camp Kearney," c. 1917. View of several 6" Howitzers, as well as several outbuildings and a line of artillery weapons under canvas covers. William McCarthy is standing next to the middle Howitzer. Camp Kearney was established by the U.S. Army in 1917 just north of San Diego. The post was largely abandoned by the government in 1920, used as a military and civilian airfield. It did not see increased military service again until the 1930s.

Caption: "Gatling gun," c. 1905. three unidentified men and William McCarthy (third from right) stand near a Gatling gun. The Gatling gun was an early rapid-fire, crank-turned weapon first used during combat in the Civil War. Developed in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the weapon was commonly used during the late nineteenth century before being superseded by newer, more modern guns.

Caption, c. 1905. Sixteen camels pull the Ringling Brothers Egyptian Circus Wagon down a street in Santa Rosa in this photograph. The Ringling Brothers Circus first came to Santa Rosa in 1903. The traveling circus became an annual event in the town for the next two decades.

Caption: "Negro Boys Dancing, Savannah, Georgia. Savannah Population is 50% Negroes, July 15, 34." A group of young boys of various ages show off their dancing skills along a country road. According to census information available online, the population of Savannah in 1930 consisted of 54.2% white, 45.7% black.

Caption: "City Hall -- Miami -- Florida, June 30 1934." This photograph depicts the Miami-Dade County Courthouse (not Miami's City Hall). Designed by architect A. Ten Eyck Brown, the Courthouse was constructed between 1925-1928. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in Florida.
