Construction began on the neoclassical California State Capitol Building, the dome of which is seen here (the rest of the building is largely obscured by trees), in 1860. Completed in 1874, the building still houses the state's legislature and the offices of the Governor.

Caption: "Tenaya Lake Resort." Small cabins in front of rocky mountainside. Named after Chief Tenaya of Yosemite Valley's Ahwahnechee People, Tenaya Lake is located between Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows within Yosemite National Park. The surface elevation of the alpine lake is 8,150 feet.

Caption: "Mount Ranier [sic], Wash.," c. 1908-1912. View of Mount Rainier, the highest peak in the Cascade Range and in the state of Washington, and part of the eastern rim of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Although it is now dormant, it is considered to be a high-risk volcano.

Caption: "Fort Stevens, Oregon," c. 1905. Panorama of Fort Stevens, built in the 1860s as part of the defensive fortifications guarding the mouth of the Columbia River. Located on the Oregon side of the river, the fort was decommissioned after World War II, its armaments and buildings removed and auctioned off. The site now serves as a state park complete with military museum.
