    Caption: "Ringling Museum -- Sarasota -- Florida, June 28 1934." Entrance to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Florida's state art museum established by John and Mable Ringling in 1927. John was a promoter and part-owner of the famous Ringling Brothers Circus, along with four of his brothers. When John and Mable built a winter home in Sarasota in 1926, they also explored the possibility of establishing an art gallery on the same property. Architect John H. Phillips designed the building, which opened to the public in 1931. John Ringling willed the facility and the art collection to the state of Florida upon his death in 1936. The museum, now known simply as "The Ringling," is under the jurisdiction of the University of Florida.

    No caption, c. 1917. Group of men posing on 6" Howitzers at Camp Kearney. William McCarthy is standing in a dark suit just beneath the barrel of the middle gun. Camp Kearney was established by the U.S. Army in 1917 just north of San Diego. The post was largely abandoned by the government in 1920, used as a military and civilian airfield. It did not see increased military service again until the 1930s.

    Caption: "CORONADO. TENT CITY.," c. 1910. View of rows of tents and sheds thatched in palm fronds along the coast near Coronado Hotel, with people strolling along the roadways. Established in 1900 for travelers who could not afford to stay in the resort hotel, the Coronado Tent City consisted of a grid of streets lined with furnished tents, near the sea shore. It also featured restaurants, a library, soda fountain, theater, bandstand, and other recreational facilities. See also 96-07-08-alb05-202 and 96-07-08-alb08-263.
