Caption: "Lower Falls - Yellowstone Grand Canyon," c. 1923. As the Yellowstone River flows north from Yellowstone Lake it passes over two waterfalls (Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls) before reaching the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. This photograph shows the 308-foot Lower Yellowstone Falls, as seen from a nearby mountain top or bluff. It carries more water volume than any other waterfall in the Rocky Mountains.

Caption: "Padre Junipero Sierra [sic] Monument. Monterey," c. 1915, shows a monument commemorating the Spanish Franciscan priest, Father Junipero Serra, who led the founding and construction of the Spanish Mission system in Alta California during the Spanish era. The monument was commissioned and erected in 1891 by Jane Stanford of Stanford University and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Caption: "Pinnacles," c. 1920. Grace McCarthy seated on a rocky outcropping in front of cliffs with unique rock formations in background. Pinnacles National Park was formerly Pinnacles National Monument, established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The rock formations are the eroded remains of the Neenach Volcano.

Caption: "Mrs Eliza Smarts Home and Kin -- Chattahoochee, Florida, June 22, 34." Eliza Smart (standing, on the left), two unidentified women, and nine children posing on the porch of a house with wood siding. This is one of the few photographs in which the McCarthys identified some of the people who they met along their travels.
