    Caption: "Yosemite - El Portal Highway," c. 1917. Grace McCarthy and an unidentified man and woman sit at the side of the El Portal Road, now California State Route 140. Their automobile is parked across the road, and timbered, granite mountainsides provide the background.

    Caption: "Delaware and Hudson R.R. Office Building, Albany, N.Y., Sept. 7, 1934." View of the enormous Gothic building constructed by and for the Delaware and Hudson Railroad Company between 1914-1918. It also housed the offices of the Albany Evening Journal. A small city park sits in front of the building's central tower, surrounded on all sides by a looped street originally intended for trolley cars. The building was gradually abandoned by the businesses within, until purchased in 1973 by the State University of New York (SUNY). SUNY renovated the building for use as its administrative offices, a purpose which it still serves today.

    Caption: "Glacier Point - 3000 Feet Above Camp Curry," c. 1917. William McCarthy poses atop Glacier Point, overlooking Yosemite Valley. Glacier Point, on the south wall of the valley 3,200 feet above what is now known as Half Dome Village, provides panoramic views of the valley and many of its features.

    Caption: "Padre Junipero Sierra [sic] Monument. Monterey," c. 1915, shows a monument commemorating the Spanish Franciscan priest, Father Junipero Serra, who led the founding and construction of the Spanish Mission system in Alta California during the Spanish era. The monument was commissioned and erected in 1891 by Jane Stanford of Stanford University and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

    No Caption: c. 1915, shows a monument with a statue of Stephen M. White on the grounds of the Los Angeles County Courthouse. Stephen M. White, a former Los Angeles district attorney, served in the California Senate, as well as acting Lieutenant Governor from 1887-1891. He also served in the United States Senate from 1893 -1899. White was also responsible for the creation of Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro. The monument was moved in 1989 to the entrance of Cabrillo Beach near the harbor where it resides today.

    Caption: "Stow Lake, Golden Gate Park," c. 1906. Lake scene, with families and couples strolling along paths on the lake shore, and rowboats on the lake itself. Created in 1893 as part of Golden Gate Park, the man-made lake surrounds Strawberry Hill Island, seen in the center of this photograph.

    Caption: "Potato Race," c. 1917. Several horseback riders holding long poles skirmish around a bucket in what appears to be a game similar to polo, played with a potato. A crowd has gathered to watch the game, while the rock cliff walls of Yosemite Valley tower in the background. Given the date, this was likely part of Independence Day festivities in the Yosemite Valley.
