Caption: "Hialeah Race Track -- Miami -- Florida July 1, 1934." View of the infield at Hialeah Park Race Track. Constructed in 1922 as a greyhound racetrack, Hialeah began hosting horse races in 1925. Joseph E. Widener purchased the track in 1930. He embarked upon a series of improvements, adding a grandstand (seen here) and clubhouse facilities designed by Lester W. Geisler, as well as landscaped gardens and a lake in the infield that became home to a flock of flamingos. The new and improved Hialeah track, now called Hialeah Park, officially opened in 1932.

Caption: "George Washington Bridge, Crossing the Hudson River, N.Y. Sept. 3, 1934." This suspension bridge, designed by Othmar Ammann, spans the Hudson River between Manhattan in New York City, and Fort Lee, New Jersey. Constructed between 1927 and 1931, the bridge included the longest main span in the world at the time, a record it held until construction of the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937. It was originally built with only one deck (as seen in this photograph), but a second deck opened in 1962. Still in active use today, it carried over 51 million vehicles in 2016.

Caption: "S.P. Hospital, S.F.," c. 1910. Constructed in 1908 and designed by architect Daniel J. Patterson, the hospital treated Southern Pacific Railroad workers from across the American West, as well as passengers injured while riding. As the twentieth century progressed and automobiles supplanted trains as the premier method of transportation for people and goods, the hospital entered a period of decline, closing in 1974. It has since been renovated and now serves as a senior housing complex.

Caption: "Court House, Santa Cruz," c. 1912-1915. Image of the courthouse building constructed in Santa Cruz in 1896. The building was periodically renovated, the most extensive occurring after the 1906 earthquake, when much of the courthouse had to be rebuilt. In 1967, the county removed its court facilities to a new building. The old courthouse was subsequently remodeled, opening in 1972 as an office and retail building. Heavy damages sustained in 1989 as a result of the Loma Prieta earthquake necessitated the building's demolition. Please note that this photograph appears to be reversed, as this is a mirror image of the structure.
