Caption: "Old State Capitol-Benicia," c. 1918, shows the Benicia State Capitol building, built in 1852, the third location of the state capital from February 1853 to February 1854, before it was moved permanently to Sacramento. The historic building was listed as a California State Historic Landmark in 1935, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Today the site is known as the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park.

Pedestrian Day kicked off the Golden Gate Bridge Fiesta celebrating the opening of the now-iconic bridge. Approximately 200,000 people walked or roller-skated across the bridge during the Pedestrian Day festivities, held the day before the bridge opened to vehicular traffic.

Considered one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and resulting fires killed an estimated 3,000 people and destroyed over 500 city blocks, leaving approximately 200,000 residents homeless.

Caption: "Old Cathedral, St. Augustine." View of the tower, columned entryway, and bells of Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. The oldest church in Florida, the first building on the site was established in 1565. The cathedral seen in this photograph (which exists today) was constructed between 1793 and 1797. The cathedral was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
