Caption: "Trinity Church, Wall Street. Aug. 29, 1934. New York City." The 281-foot-high steeple of Trinity Church spears the sky between two tall buildings on New York City's Wall Street in this photograph. The church, dedicated in 1846, was the third church built at the site. Designed by Richard Upjohn when the second Trinity Church had to be replaced due to structural issues, the present church is one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival or Neo-Gothic architecture in the nation. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

Caption: "Benicia Arsenal Entrance," c. 1915. View of the gateway to Benicia Arsenal, where William McCarthy worked (starting in 1903). Established in 1851, the Benicia Arsenal was the primary ordnance facility of the U.S. Army on the West Coast. The facility was deactivated in 1963, and closed completely the following year. The area now serves a vastly different function, providing work and retail space for artists and artisans.

Caption: "San Diego Fair Grounds." and "39-6, 3,400 Men, Naval Training Station, Balboa Park, San Diego Cal.," c. 1917. With the advent of World War I, the U.S. Navy needed additional training grounds for sailors. In 1917, the City of San Diego offered to lease the Navy a portion of Balboa Park as a temporary training site until a new, more permanent facility could be constructed. This postcard shows 3,400 sailors lined up to form a Navy flag while at the temporary training ground.
