Caption: "Fort Casey Washington," c. 1909. Overview of several buildings at Fort Casey, located on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. Construction began on the fort in 1897. Fort Casey was part of the "triangle of fire," three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. The area is now a state park.

Caption: "Agua Caliente Mexico, May 20, 34." View of an elaborate large arch over a roadway, pointing the way to Hotel Agua Caliente in Tijuana. The Agua Caliente Casino and Resort Hotel, designed by Wayne McAllister, opened in Tijuana in 1928. The resort closed only a few years later, in 1935, when Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas outlawed gambling.

Caption: "High School -- San Diego," c. 1910. By 1902 San Diego's schools had become overcrowded enough to warrant the construction of a new high school building. Completed in 1907 and designed by F.S. Allen, the new building was quickly nicknamed the "Grey Castle on the Hill" in reference to its castle-like parapets and towers. The Grey Castle was torn down in 1975 to make way for a facility in compliance with new earthquake safety laws.
