No Caption: Grace McCarthy is seen standing near the entrance of the Hotel Virginia, on Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach, California. The luxury hotel was opened in 1908 by Col. Charles Rivers Drake, a Civil War veteran and early Long Beach developer. During the Great Depression, the hotel suffered the fate of many businesses during that time and closed its doors in October of 1932.

No Caption: The Smith Tower, named after it builder, industrialist and typewriter magnate, Lyman Cornelius Smith, opened in 1914. At 38 floors, the Smith Tower was the first skyscraper in Seattle and the tallest building west of the Mississippi River, c. 1935.

Caption: "Union Depot - Kansas City," c. 1923. This Beaux Arts-style rail station opened in 1914, replacing a small depot from 1871. Decreasing rail passenger traffic after World War II resulted in the closure of the depot in 1985. However, the restored depot later reopened in 1999, containing museums and other attractions. In 2002, it was again put to service as a rail depot when Amtrak again brought passenger trains to the area.

Caption: "U.S. 10" Disappearing Gun and Carriage.," c. 1910. Side view of a coastal defense disappearing gun and its carriage. Retracting or disappearing guns were a form of artillery developed in the nineteenth century in which heavy artillery guns were placed on rotating carriages that allowed retraction of the weapon after firing, to enable reloading while under enemy fire.

Established in 1900 for travelers who could not afford to stay in the resort hotel, the Coronado Tent City consisted of a grid of streets lined with furnished tents, near the sea shore. It also featured restaurants, a library, soda fountain, theater, bandstand, and other recreational facilities.
