Caption: "Officers Quarters -- Fort Winfield Scott," c. 1912. Shows a row of multi-story homes along a landscaped street. Fort Winfield Scott was a coastal artillery post at the San Francisco Presidio. Originally named Fort Point, it was part of an effort by the U.S. government to protect the Golden Gate, entrance to the San Francisco Bay. Built between 1853-1861, the fort included emplacements for 141 guns but never fired a weapon in defense of the Bay. Its name was officially changed in 1882 to Fort Winfield Scott. This only lasted four years, until 1886 when the fort was officially downgraded to a sub-post of the San Francisco Presidio and the name discontinued. It was resurrected in 1912, with the establishment of a coastal artillery fortification at the Presidio, called, once again, Fort Winfield Scott.

Caption: "The Village," c. 1917. Street scene in the Yosemite Village, the most developed part of the Yosemite Valley. The Village is home to such amenities as a Post Office, store, medical clinic, fire station, and restaurants. Development began at the site in 1865, but most of the buildings were constructed after 1918.

Caption: "The California. " c. 1906. This photograph shows the second U.S. Navy ship to bear the Golden State's name. Launched in 1904 and commissioned in 1907, this Pennsylvania-class armored cruiser served in the Pacific fleet. Her name was changed in 1914 to the USS San Diego, in order to free up the name for a new, Tennessee-class battleship. The USS San Diego went on to serve in both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets during World War I, until being sunk off the coast of New York by a German mine in 1918, with a loss of six lives.
