Caption: "Garfield Park Conservatory - Chicago," c. 1925. Construction began on the Garfield Park Conservatory in 1906. Opened to the public in 1908, the Conservatory is one of the largest greenhouse conservatories in the United States.

Caption: "Washington Park, Albany, New York, Sept. 8, 1934." Albany's Washington Park was established in the early 1870s. Washington Park Lake, a portion of which is seen in this photograph, was created by damming Beaverkill Creek in 1873. The Lake House in the photograph was constructed in 1929, replacing an earlier building.

Caption: "East Lake [sic] Park, Los Angeles," c. 1906. Eastlake Park in Los Angeles was originally created by the city in 1881 under the name "East Los Angeles Park." Renamed Eastlake Park in 1901, it gained its current name, Lincoln Park, in 1917. This photograph shows the park's elaborate bandstand and portions of the lake for which the park is named.

Caption: "Washington Monument," c.1925. The obelisk of the Washington Monument rises above the Reflecting Pool on National Mall in Washington, D.C. Built between 1848 and 1888 to commemorate George Washington (former Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and first President of the United States), the obelisk is the world's tallest stone structure at a height of 555 feet.

Taken around 1905 in San Diego near the Old Mission, If William McCarthy's description is accurate, this person was born while California was under Spanish rule. Possibly of the Kumeyaay tribe, whose members had lived in the area long before the Spanish arrived, he may have lived and worked at Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá (Mission San Diego) or at a nearby Indian village.

Caption: "CHICAGO BOYS LANDING AT FORT ROSECRANS." View of US Navy sailors coming ashore at Fort Rosecrans. The flagship of the US fleet in the Pacific at the time, the USS Chicago was called to the fort after a boiler explosion on the USS Bennington killed sixty-six and wounded dozens more. A board of inquiry into the cause of the explosion was convened on board the Chicago. The board found that no error on the part of the Bennington's crew contributed to the explosion.
