    Caption: "Court House -- San Diego," c. 1910. View of the second courthouse built by San Diego County, completed in 1889. Designed by architectural firm Cornstock & Trotsche of San Francisco, this elaborate building featured a bell and clock tower, statues of four presidents, and 42 stained-glass windows honoring each state in the Union at the time of installation. The tower was removed in 1939. Twenty years later, the entire building was demolished in favor of a newer facility.

    Caption: "Statue of Liberty, New York." View of the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe Island (now called Liberty Island). Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the now-iconic statue was a gift from the people of France to the U.S. Built in segments in France by Gustave Eiffel (also famous for building the Eiffel Tower in Paris), the pieces were shipped from Paris to New York in 1885 and assembled. The Statue of Liberty was subsequently dedicated on October 28, 1886.

    Caption: "Church Butte [sic], near Green River, Wyoming. Oct. 2, 1934." The Church Buttes in Wyoming consist of sandstone eroded by wind and weather into a butte approximately 1,000 feet in diameter and rising up to 100 feet above the surrounding valley floor. Located along the Overland Route used by emigrants to the West Coast, the formation gained additional notoriety for being a camp site for Brigham Young and the first Mormon party to head west, as well as a relay site for the Pony Express.
