Caption: "Chicago Fair Grounds at Night. Sept. 22, 1934." View of a portion of the Century of Progress Exposition as seen at night. The Exposition, a world fair attended by thirty-nine million people, celebrated Chicago's one-hundred year anniversary of incorporation. Originally planned to only run from May to November in 1933, it was such a success that its organizers decided to keep it running for a second season from May through October the following year. The central theme of the Exposition was technological innovation, with a motto of "Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Conforms."

Caption: "Fruit Exhibit Watsonville." Exhibit at the 1912 "Big Week" in Salinas (Monterey County), an event still celebrated today as the Salinas Rodeo. The exhibit displays a building made almost entirely out of apples and apple slices. See also 96-07-08-alb05-068.

Caption: "Fort Casey Washington," c. 1909. Overview of several buildings at Fort Casey, located on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. Construction began on the fort in 1897. Fort Casey was part of the "triangle of fire," three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. The area is now a state park.

Caption: "Monte Rio Cal," c. 1906. Scene on the Russian River with wharf at right, some houses along the river bank in the distance, and a wooden footbridge crossing the river. Monte Rio, north of San Francisco in Sonoma County, became a resort area in the early twentieth century, after the sawmills providing the area's primary industry closed down.

Caption: "Biltmore Hotel -- Coral Gables -- Miami -- Florida. June 30, 1934." View of the Miami Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, part of the Bowman-Biltmore hotel chain. The luxury hotel, designed by Schultze and Weaver, was the tallest building in Florida at the time of its completion in 1926. It held this record until 1928, when the Miami-Dade Courthouse was constructed.
