Retracting or disappearing guns were a form of artillery developed in the nineteenth century in which heavy artillery guns were placed on rotating carriages that allowed retraction of the weapon after firing, to enable reloading while under enemy fire.

Caption: "Blue Rock Springs -- Solano Co.," c. 1915. Grace McCarthy (far left) and two unidentified friends or relatives at what is now known as Blue Rock Springs. In the 1860s, White Sulphur Springs (in the vicinity of Vallejo) was developed for use as a mineral springs resort, featuring a hotel, several cottages, and an "amusement" building with a dance floor, bar, and billiard room. Manuel Madrid obtained the property around the turn of the twentieth century, and changed the name to Blue Rock Springs. The area is now managed by the Greater Vallejo Recreation District as Blue Rock Springs Park.

Caption: "Fort Worden, Wash." Washington, c. 1908.Construction of Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Washington, on Admiralty Inlet of Puget Sound began in 1898, and by 1902 it was serving as an active U.S. Army base. Fort Worden was part of the "triangle of fire", three coastal defense fortifications (Fort Casey, Fort Worden, and Fort Flagler) guarding the entrance to Puget Sound. The U.S. sold the property to the state of Washington in 1957. In 1973, the fort and surrounding area opened as Fort Worden State Park.

Established in 1776 by Spanish explorers, the Presidio is a fortified location overlooking the Golden Gate, the entrance into San Francisco Bay. It was closed as a military structure in 1995, and is now a park within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
