Wide promenade along the beach at Daytona Beach, featuring a row of benches at the left (seaside) and covered seating areas on the right, with palm trees. Daytona Beach was created when the neighboring towns of Daytona, Daytona Beach, Kingston, and Seabreeze merged in 1926. The area's beach was already well-known in both tourist and automobile circles

    Caption: "San Diego Fair Grounds." and "39-9, U.S. Naval Training Station, Balboa Park, San Diego," c. 1917. With the advent of World War I, the U.S. Navy needed additional training grounds for sailors. In 1917, the City of San Diego offered to lease the Navy a portion of Balboa Park as a temporary training site until a new, more permanent facility could be constructed. This postcard shows groups of sailors drilling in formation while a small crowd watches.

    Caption: "Carquinez Bridge, Crockett, California. Oct. 9, 1934." This photograph shows the original Carquinez Bridge, built to span the Carquinez Strait and thereby contribute to a direct route between Sacramento and San Francisco. The steel cantilevered bridge, designed by Robinson & Steinman, was constructed in 1927. It is no longer extant, having been replaced by two parallel bridges constructed in 1958 and 2003. The structure of the original bridge was removed in 2007. See also 96-07-08-alb04-004.
